Essential First Aid Procedures for Accidental Care by Manjeera Hospital, Sangareddy

Accidents can occur at any time and place, often when we least expect them. Being prepared with the knowledge of first aid procedures can make a significant difference in the outcome of such incidents. Manjeera Hospital, Sangareddy, is committed to ensuring the well-being of our community by providing essential guidance on how to handle accidental care. Here are some crucial first-aid procedures to follow in case of an emergency:

1. Assess the Situation

Before administering first aid, it’s crucial to ensure that the scene is safe for both the injured person and the helper. Look for potential dangers such as fire, electrical hazards, or traffic. If the area is unsafe, move the injured person to a safer location if possible.

2. Call for Help

Immediately call emergency services or the nearest medical facility. Provide them with clear and concise information about the accident, including the location, the number of people injured, and the nature of their injuries.

3. Check for Responsiveness

Gently shake the person and ask if they can hear you. If they do not respond, check their airway, breathing, and circulation (the ABCs of first aid).

4. Perform CPR (if necessary)

If the person is not breathing and has no pulse, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR):

  • Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest and the other hand on top.
  • Press down hard and fast, allowing the chest to rise completely between compressions.
  • Perform 30 compressions followed by two rescue breaths. Continue until help arrives or the person starts breathing.

5. Control Bleeding

For external bleeding:

  • Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage.
  • Elevate the injured area above the heart level if possible.
  • Do not remove the cloth or bandage if it becomes soaked with blood. Instead, add more layers on top.

For severe bleeding:

  • Use a tourniquet if the bleeding is uncontrollable and you have been trained to do so.
  • Apply it above the wound and tighten until the bleeding stops.

6. Treat Burns

For minor burns:

  • Cool the burn with running cool (not cold) water for at least 10 minutes.
  • Cover the burn with a sterile, non-adhesive bandage or cloth.

For severe burns:

  • Do not immerse the burn in water.
  • Cover the area with a clean, cool cloth or sterile dressing.
  • Avoid applying creams, oils, or ice to the burn.

7. Manage Fractures

If you suspect a fracture:

  • Avoid moving the injured person unless absolutely necessary.
  • Immobilize the affected area using a splint or padding.
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling and pain.

8. Handle Choking

For an adult or child who is choking:

  • Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist.
  • Place a fist just above the navel and grasp it with your other hand.
  • Perform quick, upward thrusts until the object is expelled.

For an infant:

  • Lay the infant face down on your forearm and give five back blows between the shoulder blades.
  • Turn the infant over and give five chest thrusts using two fingers in the center of the chest.

9. Address Poisoning

If you suspect poisoning:

  • Try to identify the substance involved.
  • Call emergency services and provide them with as much information as possible.
  • Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a medical professional.

10. Stay Calm and Reassure

Remaining calm is essential in any emergency. Reassure the injured person that help is on the way and try to keep them as comfortable as possible.
